Brigadier Muhammad Mumtaz Khalid was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers, Pakistan Army in 1966. He is a graduate of the Military College of Engineering,Risalpur  Cantt,  and Command and Staff College, Quetta.           When the KKH (N-35) takes off to the north east from Hassan Abdal, it soon enters Hazara district of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and its sizeable town Haripur, known for its thriving fruit market and a telephone factory. Thereafter, the valley gets narrower as one reaches another town, Havelian, on the bank of Daur river. Then a winding road ascends through a picturesque landscape and reaches Abbottabad, a military garrison, established by Major James Abbott, which is famous for the prestigious Pakistan Military Academy, and the Baluch, Frontier Force and Army Medical Corps regimental centres.           The first draft of the book was ready by December 31, 2003. Considering the voluminous nature of the book, it was decided to publish it in two volumes.Volume one of the book covers the construction history of the Indus Valley Road together with other infrastructure, from 1948 to 1967.         Karakoram Highway (KKH) is the road linking Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan with Xingjiang region of China. It was constructed by Pakistani and Chinese Engineers from 1966 to 1982. It is believed to be the highest paved highway in the world.

          There has been no written account on the history of construction of Karakoram Highway. Since the construction of the Karakoram Highway, there was a need to document and record the events of the construction of KKH, also to pay tribute to those brave and courageous sappers who laid down their lives for the construction of this highway.  This monumental task of compiling HISTORY OF KARAKORAM HIGHWAY has been undertaken by vetern sapper officer BRIGADIER (RETIRED) MUHAMMAD MUMTAZ KHALID of Pakistan Army, Corps of Engineers with the support of Eingineer-in-Chief's Branch and Frontier Works Organization. After reasearch of over 5 years, he has been able to write, what is now first and most authentic book on history of Karakoram Highway.  

          In this website, an endavour has been made to acknowledge the efforts of author and let the world know about the present and past of the KARAKORAM HIGHWAY.
       The present Karakoram Highway (KKH) was actually started in 1958 as a modest project to provide an all-weather jeepable link to the Northern Areas. This road was to take off from a small village, Karora, in the former Swat State,  the nearest roadhead from the Indus valley and, following the Indus, was to join the Babusar track at Chilas, which had been developed into a jeepable road up to Gilgit.
